In July of 2000 Ben and I spent about three weeks in Montreux, Switzerland to participate in the annual Montreux Jazz Festival. Over the course of the festival, when we weren’t playing our actual gigs, we would spend most of our days playing on the Quai which runs beside Lake Geneva where the festival takes place. While out on the Quai we constantly encountered other musicians who were either on their way to their own gigs or just out taking in the festival. By the end of the festival at least twenty-five musicians of about a dozen nationalities had joined us in our impromptu jam sessions by the lake.
When we returned to the US, Ben and I decided to make a recording that would be representative of those sessions in Montreux. The music on this CD is the result of a number of sessions which took place between August of 2000 and May of 2001. Sometimes it was just the two of us, but other times, just as in Montreux, other players stopped by to sit in. In keeping with the spirit of our Montreux jams, there were no rehearsals and everything is a first take. Before some songs we might have discussed a basic arrangement but mostly the arrangements developed on the fly. The result of those sessions, we feel, is a collection of music that will give the listener a good idea of what it sounded like along the Quai Edouard Jaccoud in Montreux last summer. In addition to the core duo of Kevin Van Sant on guitar and Ben Palmer on Bass, Sessions also features at various times: Kevin Brock on drums, Ed Butler on drums, Todd Proctor on percussion, and Mark Wells on Fender Rhodes and organ.
